Star Folder- The Star folder is our main way of communicating with each other. It is a folder that holds everything you need to keep undated on classroom and school events. It is VERY important that you check and empty your child's Star folder each night. Please make sure to sign/initial your child's behavior chart and Compass/reading log nightly!!! This folder helps each child to establish good organizational skills as well as teach them responsibility.
DAILY 5: This year, we are doing Daily 5 in our classroom. The Daily 5™ is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. It is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy. Each day, your child will participate in activities such as "Read to Self," "Read to Someone," "Work on Writing," "Word Work," and "Listen to Reading." You may hear your students use these terms and refer to the Daily 5 at home.
We will be in the launching phase of Daily 5 until mid-October, as it takes time to learn the routines. We will practice building "stamina" and working independently. During the Daily 5 time as students will work on these independent tasks, I will work with individuals or small groups of students on reading/literacy skills. I will include some picture of our Daily 5 tasks under our Classroom Pictures tab as we move forward.

Behavior Zone
In our classroom, we have a behavior color system. Your child’s clothespin will be on purple, green, yellow, blue, or red each day. Each child’s clothespin begins each day on green, which is where they will be working to stay throughout the day. The different colors indicate the following: purple= great day, caught doing something good; green = good day; yellow = one warning; blue = several warnings and a discussion with me; red = too many warnings/unacceptable behavior, a discussion with me, note or call home, and a loss of a privilege. I added the purple, because I want children to know I am looking for positive behavior, and am hoping this will encourage positive behavior.
Extra Practice
Starting in October I will be putting a weekly extra practice packet (1 page front and back) on our class website mrstompkinskindergarten.weebly.com. Please print at home or library. Extra Practice will be available on website on Mondays. (If you don’t have access to a computer or printer please inform me ASAP, and I will send home a hard copy). Please do not turn weekly practice in to me.
Reading at Home
Please remember that reading with your child for 15-20 minutes each night is essential for your child’s reading and writing development. Please try to make this a part of your nightly routine and write how many minutes per night you and your child have read together on the Daily Report/Reading Log form. Our goal for kindergarten is 60 minutes per week. Thanks!
No Excuse Words
The “No Excuse Words” for the year are included in your Star Book. Knowing these words will help your child with beginning reading and writing skills. I usually introduce two new words per week. I will post the new words for that week on our class website. You can practice these words in a variety of ways including flashcards, matching games, memory games, and having your child locate these words in books. We do practice these words in class, but the more you practice them at home, the more comfortable and confident he/she will be with them.
